Generally, if we conduct the propagation through a leaf method, we could spot the roots emerging within two weeks’ time.

After 8 weeks, leaves formation will take place and then you could transplant them in a little pot as you wish.

When you want to propagate through leaf cuttings, first you need to remove a healthy leaf fresh from a mother succulent.

It would be very successful if we could conduct this method for succulents like Echeverias. That is because their leaves are fleshy, chubby, and plump.

On top of that, the leaves of these plants are very easy to pop off.

Special features of succulent’s leaves

The thickness and fleshiness of the leaves are two most important facts about succulent leaves.

The succulent leaves are generally  chubby and fleshy because they are the water conservation parts of the plant.

Hence why their leaves are in contrast to other plants’ leaves. Consequently, they have inherited a nickname called fat plants. That is referring to the fleshy leaves and to the stem of the succulents.

Since they can conserve water in their body, they could thrive well in drought conditions as they will be consuming those during heated times.

Succulents in general form in various colors, shapes. However, all of them can conserve water in the plants and that  is a common feature among all of them.

Removing leaves

When you have to remove the leaves from a succulent, you need to make sure that leaves are healthy and plump.

Best is to use leaves which are large and matured. Literally there is a tendency of them to grow roots rapidly compared to the tiny leaves. You can count on more reliable and rapid results from them .

You should gently take off the leaf from the stem. You could simply wiggle to take off the leaf. Ensure that you do it gently.

Also ensure that you remove the whole lead from the stem without leaving any part of it on the stem. Then place removed leave on clean soil surface for sprouting

Sprouting

You may provide them bright and indirect sunlight . You could do a light misting also whenever you spot the soil is dry.

You could mist them about twice a week. When it is a few weeks’ time, you could see them sprouting. After that, you can witness how the baby plants have formed.

Potting

After propagating your leaves in soil, you could use a shallow tray and stick the leaves which have become callused.

Then add   proper succulent mix for the tray. Best is to blend some perlite and some pumice for the succulent mix.

Avoid watering or you could do it sparingly until the roots start to form. If you supply them with excess water, chances are that leaves rot would occur.

You could alternatively, spray a little amount of water to provide the leaves a little moisture.

When you water them sparingly, make sure that water is not landing on the leaves. You need to place the succulent in a place where it exposes to bright indirect sunlight until the new plants stabilize.

At this point, you could change them into their regular pots. When you do this, be very gentle and do not do any harm to the roots.

In case they fall, you could cover the bottle top whilst using a plastic wrap. Further you should make a hole in it and place the leaf through.

Wait for some time and then locate the cutting in a place where they get bright sunlight. Later, sprouting of the leaves will take place.

When the healthy roots have formed, you could proceed with planting them in a succulent soil mix.

Once the original leaves are dry, you could smoothly take them off. Unless, you have to wait until they fall off naturally.

When to repot propagated succulents?

Ensure that you do not repot them during their dormant season

Other methods to propagate succulents.

You could use the stem cutting method, offset methods as well as the seeds to propagate the succulents.

Stem Cutting

You could propagate the rosette succulents or the branched succulents through stem cutting as the results are more reliable with those.

You could do this when they in their growing season. Otherwise, you could do it at the end of the dormant period.

Generally the dormant season would be winter whereas spring would be the actively growing season.

You should use clean equipment such as scissors, razor blades or knives to trim a cutting from the plant. you should select a short stem so that you are sure it is active and growing well.

You should trim it gently and carefully  towards the bottom of the plant while using aforesaid clean equipment.

In case the stem has got any damages, you should go ahead with a new cutting. You should leave the branch to recover for a few days before you report them.

When you repot, you should place it in a bright sunny location and water them sparingly. When it is about four weeks old, they will root.

Keep in mind to leave the stem until it becomes callous for a few days. That will avoid them getting infections and rot once you repot them.

The stem from which you cut off the Rosset will produce new leaves. Hence you should leave that pot as it is and water them until they form a new growth from time to time.

Offset

This is quite like the way we propagate the plants through cuttings.

There are plants like  aloe, cacti, and hens and chicks which form offsets. Offsets literally means, the baby plants which grow at the bottom of the mother plant.

Once you spot any offset, you should first let them grow for about three weeks. After three weeks, inspect whether they have formed any roots.

If they have rooted, you should take off the offset from the mother plant whilst trimming it with a clean sharp knife.

Alternatively, you could even twist the offset until you can move it from the plant. Make sure that you do not do any root damage here.

There is no harm for the mother plant if you remove the offset. In fact it will be healthy for the mother plant.

As then they can direct all its energy for its own growth. When you remove the offset , you could either propagate it in water or in soil.

If you wish to propagate it in the soil, you should first fill a tray with proper soil mix. It has to be ideally a cactus soil mix or a succulent soil mix.

Then place the  offset in the soil mix and wait for a  few weeks .  After three weeks, roots will form and you could spot the other plants also which are in the initial stages as well.

Next you should water them properly. You should water the offsets when the soil is dry before the roots develop.

Do not over water them. When the roots develop, you should water them once a week but thoroughly.

If you spot the original offset is about to perish you should take it off gently whilst making sure that you do not trouble the roots.

When you grow offsets in soil, do not expose them to direct sunlight. When they have developed the roots, you could transplant the offsets into the regular pots as you wish.

In terms of propagating them in water, you should first place the offset on a rim of a glass of water. Then expose it to the sun.

You should ideally place it in a bright sunny spot at your home. Then the plant will grow well and make its own root system.

Then let the offset grow. After sometime, you will spot root developing and move towards the water.

While this takes place, you should keep the offset in the glass of water which will help them to continue their growth.  Unless, you could transplant them into a new pot or to a tray of soil.

Seeds

This is literally the slowest way of propagating the succulents. Having said that if you are someone who can wait for so long and be patient, you should do this method.

Generally, you could spot the seeds of the mature plants in the bottom part of the flower (Aka the fruit ). You could pick them once the bloom is over.

There are certain instances, where the seed look like dust and  orange in color. It is relatively hard to propagate. No matter where you collect the seeds, you need to ensure that they are fresh, healthy and dry.

First step would be to arrange the planter along with cactus soil mix or with succulent soil mix. You should conduct a thorough watering.

After that, you should soak the seeds in hot water for half an hour which will help to ease the seed coat.

When they are soft and properly soaked , you could lay those seeds on the top surface of the soil mix. Make sure you keep gaps among them so that they can grow well.

After that, you could cover the seeds whilst using a top dressing. For instance you may use sandy or sifted succulent mix. Do not bury them though.

You may use a spray bottle to water the seeds daily with a good mist. Further make sure that you let only the top layer of the soil dry between watering sessions.

Locate the plant in hot conditions. Ideally within a temperature range of  75-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

You could do a little trick here in placing a clear plastic bucket or a Ziplock bag  to cover the planters.

That will make greenhouse conditions for the plant. In fact then , it could keep the seeds moist and heated.
